A few portraits.

I was rather taken with the idea of portrait painting for a while, and knocked out a few.  I really must get back on that horse.  It's a fun one to ride.

This was the start of a painting for a series on Sinbad the Sailor.  It only ever got this far as the studio I was in was proving impractical to work in.  I gave this to my model, Ren, to say thanks.

Record Store Day 2011.

This is a quite large, square painting of yours truly, waiting in eager anticipation to purchase a whole load of screaming metal records during record store day 2011 in Brighton.

Cloud studies

Some quick paintings of the sky. I think I'd been to visit the Ashmolean museum in Oxford and seen a painting by Constable that inspired me.

These two paintings are from a trip to Wales in 2011.  They're both 1m square.

I went on a camping trip for a few days, which included a stay near my personal favourite spot for mountain biking at Coed Y Brenin

This was a follow up trip from the year or so before when I went to North Wales and did a couple of watercolour paintings of National Trust Property 'Bodnant', and Rock Climbers delight Llanberris Pass

When I got home I included an etching in the series of artworks, which inexplicably appears at the bottom of this post I wrote a while back showcasing etchings in America.

Paint-Off Friday

Today is the first "Paint-Off Friday".  I have spent the afternoon painting a picture in the first Paint-Off Friday.  Inspired by my friend James Colmer http://jamescolmer.blogspot.co.uk/ who paints a picture every week for his blog, I though I'd get my arse in gear and do the same.  In true 21st century style I took out-of-focus photographs to document the pertinent parts of the picture as I did them.

Here is the canvas.  It's horizontal as I've not yet decided on the image that I'm going to paint.

I've chosen an image of one of my favourite walks over the South Downs near Brighton, and made a tonal painting of where bits should be in the picture.

I've moved into the kitchen where the light is burning on to my canvas and making me more-or-less unable to see the colours.  But hey!  It's ok!  It's Paint-Off Friday, and on days like this, anything goes!

I've put most of the sky in.  Shortly after this the light went more or less entirely, so I had to guess what colours to put where.

And here's the finished painting, photographed under a very yellow light.

This remains my favourite painting I've done in many years.  Having just been going through all my old photos, I found the original snapshot that I took to use as reference for the painting (which has been on display continuously wherever I've lived since).  It's not necessarily the best painting I've ever done, but it's the one I enjoy looking at most.

Here I am!

This was painted a few years back when I was feeling all enthused about portrait painting.  It was done from a photograph of me taken in India in 2008.

Portrait of Gregg

Done a couple of years back, this is one of my favourite portraits that I've done. I think I'll use more gold in paintings from now on.

A work in progress, all the way to the finished painting.  This is of the interior of a bus in Sri Lanka.  It was quite opulent, with red velvet drapes hanging from the ceiling.  Still rather uncomfortable for anyone over 5 foot tall, but I'm sure the opulence made up for it in a rather roundabout manner.

One day, I maaaaay get around to finishing this off.  Until then, it's just going to sit, gazing out of the porch window, wondering to itself what it'd be like when it's finished.

I've put a painting into a charity auction called "Stars on Canvas" http://www.willowfoundation.org.uk/starsoncanvas which raises money for 16-40 year olds with serious illness, to allow them to have a day out every so often. Also featured are people like Wayne Rooney, Tracey Emin, and James Bond.

Here's mine if you'd like to bid on it - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rory-Walker-Stars-canvas-charity-art-/180592259299?pt

My entry for the London Lives Competition

The Willow Foundation (http://willowfoundation.org.uk/Home) organises special days for people aged 16-40 with serious illness. Every year they have a "Stars on Canvas" exhibition where people from all over the media world make a 6"x6" painting, which is auctioned off to raise funds. Here's mine for this years show -
