I saw some prints by Eric Gill at an art show in London and was rather impressed by the simplicity of line that he employed.  I took a couple of the photographs that I'd taken whilst traversing Sri Lanka, and drew the pertinent features on to some lino to try making prints in a similar style.

A work in progress, all the way to the finished painting.  This is of the interior of a bus in Sri Lanka.  It was quite opulent, with red velvet drapes hanging from the ceiling.  Still rather uncomfortable for anyone over 5 foot tall, but I'm sure the opulence made up for it in a rather roundabout manner.

My trip to Sri Lanka was designed to be a reportage drawing journey.  I was to visit lots of places, talk to people, watch the world go by, and paint as I went.  I took a (flipping heavy) moleskine watercolour A4 hardback book to keep a track of everything as I went, and chose a selection of different styles to work in en-route.  This gave the finished project an interesting, hotchpotch feel to it, and is a method that I'm going to employ in future travel journals.  What I noticed and enjoyed most about this method of travel is that it's very easy to meet people, everyone wants to know you, and despite being a solitary experience, it's very sociable too.  I recommend it to everyone.

If someone said to me, "Would you like to go back to Sri Lanka this afternoon, drop everything and just go?", I'd say yes.  Last November's trip was wonderful, I fell in love with the place and would recommend it to anyone who fancied visiting somewhere a little different.  Beautiful.
